Fort De Soto Park

Fort De Soto Park in Florida is a county park composed of a five different islands, which cover a totel of 1,136 acres. Located off the southern tip of St. Petersburg, most visitors to the Fort De Soto Park area are drawn to the region because of the shallow waters surrounding the islands. In this area, visitors can view numerous schools of kingfish and tarpon, both of which can be seen from the pier.
The main island of the five islands making up Fort De Soto Park is called Mullet Key. The other four are Bonne Fortune Key, St. Christopher Key, St. Jean Key, and Madelaine Key. Though all five were once separated, they are now connected to each other by land. In addition, all of the islands are now accessible by a toll road that is stationed on the mainland.
For those that enjoy fishing, the Fort De Soto Park area also offers two fishing piers , both of which offer bait and tackle as well as food concession stands. The Fort De Soto Park area also offers numerous picnic areas and 235 campsites, which features modern restrooms, a camp store, and a laundry room.
Visitors that enjoy boating will enjoy the 800 foot boat ramp as well as the 21/4 mile canoe trail. Nature and excitement can be further enjoyed on the seven mile multi-purpose trail or the barrier free nature trail.

Another option is to take a ferry to Egmont key, where visitors can experience the Egmont Key State Park. This Florida State Park is just southwest of Fort De Soto Park and can only be reached by ferry. Here, visitors can see the ruins of Fort Dade from the Spanish-American War as well as the Egmont Key Lighthouse. The Egmont Key State park is also a wildlife refuge, which was established in 1974.
For those the enjoy swimming, the Fort De Soto Park area also offers two swimming areas. These areas are referred to as North Beach and South Beach. North Beach has routinely been listed as one of the top beaches in American on several lists, even being listed as number one by DrBeach.org in 2005.
