Hawksnest Bay
Hawksnest Bay, which is located on St. John in the United States Virgin Islands, is just one of many beautiful beaches on St. John. As the closest north beach on St. John, it is an easy drive from Cruz Bay and offers ample parking near to the beach. Therefore, carrying all of the family supplies for an afternoon of fun in the sun is not too much trouble. One some weekend afternoons, however, parking can become a bit crowded.
Although there are only pit toilets and no running water, the entire family will be sure to enjoy a visit to Hawksnest Bay. In addition to the pristine beach, which provides for excellent swimming and snorkeling opportunities, there is a shady wooded area between the parking lot and the beach. There are also two covered pavilions with decks and tables that are excellent for family get-togethers and parties. Uncovered picnic areas, including barbecue grills, are also available at Hawksnest Bay.
Since Hawksnest Bay faces the east, it receives a great deal of morning sun. Therefore, it is the perfect location for swimming in the early morning light. Due to its location, it also becomes shaded earlier in the afternoon. For beachcombers looking to take a break from the sun, this can be a perk as well.
The best time for snorkeling at Hawksnest Bay is when the waters are calm. This offers the best visibility possible. The reef is only a few yards from the center of the beach and is a popular snorkeling destination. One of the major draws for is the orange elkhorn coral as well as the vast number of fish and other sea creatures living within the reach. For those that have never been snorkeling before, the black rocks separating Hawksnest Beach and Gibney Beach provide a safe, shallow-water location where a number of colorful fish may be observed.
For visitors wishing to frolic on white sand beaches and to get away from the crowds of Hawksnest Bay, adjacent Little Hawksnest is like a hidden treasure. Located just west of the main beach, it only takes about two minutes to climb over the rocks separating the two beaches.
