Lanikai Beach
Lanikai Beach on Oahu in Hawaii literally translates to mean "heavenly sea," and for good reason. The area is known for its many different shades of blue found throughout the waters and the sky as well as the crystal clarity of the waters. The beautiful blue skies and water combined with the gorgeous palm trees swaying in the wind upon the powdery sands is precisely why Lanikai Beach is the location of many of the top model shoots in the world.
Lanikai Beach, which is found on the Windward side of Oaho within Kailua, truly represents the tropical look many fantasize about when envisioning Hawaii. Mokulua and Mokumanu, two nearby twin offshore islands, only add to the atmosphere when combined with the clear skies and water. Other elements that help create the picturesque look include the clean and wide beach lined with palm trees along the backshore.
Lanikai Beach is only accessible through public access walkways and care must be taken to avoid trespassing on the property of the local residents. In addition, the beach offers no fresh water, facilities, or lifeguard. Nonetheless, it provides excellent opportunities for both snorkeling and swimming, with many of the residents of Oahu believing it offers the best swimming in Hawaii. In addition, there are numerous shady areas where one can go to get out of the sun and there are several large and interesting rocks to explore.
Many visitors to Lanikai Beach also enjoy visiting both of the twin islands, which are located offshore from the beach by about a mile from the south end. One of the favorite activities on these islands is bird watching, as both islands are bird sanctuaries.
The island of Mokulua is also a popular destination for surfing, kayaking, boating, and paddling. Although some visitors are tempted to swim to the islands from Lanikai Beach, it is best not to because it is an upwind journey against an upcurrent. In addition, because they are located seaward of Lanikai Reef, the area tends to have a high surf. This is particular true during the winter.
Lanikai Beach in Oahu, Hawaii is certainly one of the most picturesque of all of the Hawaiian beaches. It has long been a favorite spot for professional photo shoots, and for good reason. With the breathtaking scenery and opportunities for snorkeling and other traditional beach activities, it will be sure to draw in large crowds for many more years to come.
