Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach is a city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay shores as well as on the Atlantic Ocean. While the southern half of the city is comprised of marshes, rural areas, and farmland, it also offers major resorts, hundreds of hotels and motels, miles of beaches, and numerous restaurants.
In addition to its pristine beaches, the Virginia Beach area is also home to many state parks, many of which offer protected beach areas. This home dates back to the late 17th century and is the second oldest house in Virginia Beach. Another home of historical significance is the Adam Thoroughgood House, which now serves as a museum.
For those interested in getting in touch with nature, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge can also be found on Virginia Beach. Established in 1938, this 8,000 acre fresh water refuse is bordered by Back Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Here, visitors can see maritime forests, large sand dunes, ponds, fresh water marshes, and ocean beaches. Most of the refuge is a marshland and consists of islands within the waters of Back Bay.
False Cape State Park is also found in Virginia Beach. This state park forms a mile-wide barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and Back Bay. It also forms a boarder between Virginia and North Carolina. It is a popular destination for hiking, boating, and bicycling.
The Virginia Aquarium is also found on Virginia Beach. Here, visitors can view a 300,000 gallon aquarium containing brown sharks, nurse sharks, stingrays and more. They can also enjoy a 70,000 galloon seat turtle aquarium and a natural trail.
